Young has huge game against Hawaii

HONOLULU — Former Phoenix High standout Alex Young erupted for 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in UC Irvine's 78-72 loss to Hawaii on Saturday night.

Christian Standhardinger scored 20 points and Hauns Brereton added 16 for Hawaii, which erased a second-half deficit to win.

Vander Joaquim had 15 points for the Rainbow Warriors (15-9, 9-4 Big West), who won their fifth straight game.

Daman Starring had 18 points for the Anteaters (12-13, 6-6).

Hawaii trailed 34-31 at the break and fell behind by seven points in the second half. But a 14-0 run over a 6:23 stretch gave the Warriors the lead for good.

Vander had seven points during the surge, and Standhardinger's back-to-back jumpers made the score 49-42 with 11:29 left. The Anteaters got within four points down the stretch, but Hawaii protected the lead by going 11 of 12 from the free-throw line in the final 1:28.
