  • Thomas Porter Gass, 85, passed away February 8, 2013, after a two-month valiant battle with lung cancer. He passed away at his daughter's home, in his beloved recliner, surrounded by his family.
Tom was born June 4, 1927, to Vera and Conrad Gass, in Tacoma, Wash., where he grew up. He graduated from Stadium High School and joined the Navy August 15, 1945, two weeks prior to the end of WWII. Dad often joked that it was his enlistment that compelled the Japanese to surrender.
He attended University of Puget Sound for two years on the GI Bill, while working at the Tribune Cleaners, the family dry cleaning business in Tacoma.
In 1950, he married our beautiful mother, Donna Ruth Rogerson, who preceded him in death in 2004. They had three children, Sally Seibert (Don), of Phoenix, Ore, Thomas (Bobbette), and William (Valentine), of Medford.
Dad settled into a 30-year career with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, which brought them to Medford in 1960. He was known in that circle of salespeople as "The Camel Man."
In retirement, Tom and Donna travelled extensively throughout the U.S. When at home, they hosted an on-going series of parties which included everything from family birthdays to fabulously detailed themed affairs.
Dad loved spending time on the golf course, forever in the quest for that elusive "hole-in-one." He had a general love of sports, but especially baseball. He could recall, in sometimes excruciating detail, almost any game he had ever seen.
In addition to his children, Tom is survived by his sister, Corrine Jane Blakeslee, of Tacoma, Wash.; nine beautiful grandchildren, Elizabeth, Andrew, April, Conrad, Donna, Laken, Bill Jr., Gabriel, and Alexander; two great-grandchildren, Porter and Liam; and one great-granddog, Daisy, who steadfastly lay by Tom's side in the weeks prior to his passing.
Tom was a kind and loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He will be greatly missed.
A special thanks to Asante Hospice for their loving support and expertise. The family wishes contributions be made to Asante Hospice in lieu of flowers.
A Rosary/memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2013, at Perl Funeral Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, February 16, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Arrangements by Perl Funeral Home.
