  • Classes will reconvene at Crater High School in Central Point on Tuesday, Feb. 19, district administrators announced Wednesday afternoon.
The school has been closed since Monday following flooding caused by a break in the main water line early Monday morning.
Based on the recommendation of onsite engineers, district administrators decided during a meeting Wednesday that the flooded structure at Crater could not be adequately examined in time for students to return this week. They had initially decided on Wednesday to reopen the school Friday.
"We determined based on the need to do some further structural examination, that it wasn't worth trying to hurry things up to get kids back in there for one day," said Superintendent Randy Gravon.
On Tuesday, students in the Crater Academy of Health and Public Service and Crater School of Business, Innovation and Science will report to their classrooms on the same schedule as before the flood.
Students in the Crater Renaissance Academy will meet in the Crater Performing Arts Center first thing Tuesday morning for instruction on how their classes and schedule will be configured during the reconstruction of several classrooms.
Gravon said classes could take place in the library, student center or gym while the flooded wing is repaired.
The area most damaged by the broken water line was the main floor classrooms of Renaissance Academy. Renaissance is currently housed in the old Crater gym which was remodeled into classrooms during the late 1970's, when the current gym was built. Water has saturated through several layers of flooring, which will require removal before it can be repaired.
The district has not yet determined how to make up the lost week of instruction for high school students.
Staff members from Crater has been reporting to the district office or other schools during the closure.
