  • South Medford's hockey team captured the Southern Oregon League championship with a come-from-behind, 9-4 victory over North Medford at The RRRink on Thursday.
    The Panthers, who played with only seven players because of injury and illness, trailed 3-0 after the first period but stormed ahead with four unanswered goals in the second period.
    They then pulled away, scoring the first four goals of the third.
    Preston Carney tallied five goals and had two assists, and Cy Jenson amassed three goals and three assists for the Panthers, who defeated their rivals for the second time in three nights.
    South Medford qualified for the state tournament Feb. 23-24 in Portland but is uncertain whether it will participate because of its depleted numbers.
    Ryan Lund added a goal and an assist in the win, while Isaac Crumley and Terrence Cheeseboro each had two assists.
    Goalie Jon Lines had 27 saves on 31 shots against him.
    North Medford got two goals and an assist from Will Spence, a goal and an assist from Max Henry and a score from Justin Lillman. Josh Wu had two assists and Michael Fthenakis and Jeremy Wu one each.
    Black Tornado goalie Calvinn Casaday had 26 saves against 35 shots.
    TRIAD 61, RV ADVENTIST 31 — Triad opened a 25-14 halftime lead and pulled away in the second half of the Mountain Valley League game at Rogue Valley Adventist.
    The Hawks got 10 points and nine rebounds each from Ashton Petray and Kendra Haugen. Petray also had four steals for RV Adventist (6-17, 4-11 MVL).
