  • Our beloved Norma Rose went home to be with her Lord and Savior February 4, 2013. She was born July 25, 1922 at home in Table Rock to Charles Welden and Rose Nealon Sage.
She attended grade school in the two-room Table Rock School that became Table Rock Bible Church which Norma faithfully attended. She graduated as Salutatorian of her class from Central Point High School in 1940. In 1943 she married Arthur Miller and had a son, Daniel. This marriage ended in divorce in 1946.
Norma worked at the Medford Mail Tribune in the Classifieds Department where she met her future husband, Norman Matteson, when he came in to place an ad. They married on August 5, 1951.
Besides a mother and homemaker, Norma worked at the Jackson County Sheriff's Civil Department for 27 years. In her youth Norma enjoyed swimming in the Rogue River and climbing Table Rock. She valued her pioneer heritage - that of the Nealon and Sage families. Like her ancestors, she was gifted in writing poetry and storytelling. She loved a good book, daily crossword puzzle, and Jeopardy. She also enjoyed playing the harmonica, which she learned in childhood. Norma was active in the Gideon's Women's Auxiliary for many years.
She is survived by her younger brother, Daniel (Doris) Sage of Syracuse, N.Y.; her children, Daniel (Shelley) Matteson, Kathleen (Tom) Carlisle, Kirk (Teddie) Matteson, Laurie (David) Guillory, Scott Matteson, Elizabeth Matteson, Margaret (Duane) Epple; 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; plus many more relatives, neighbors, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Norman; her sisters, Edith Sage Gault Patterson and Ruth Sage Bishop; brother Robert W. Sage; grandson Joshua W. Guillory; and great-granddaughter Tatum Teller.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Table Rock Bible Church, 10545 Table Rock Road, Central Point.
