  • Margaret "Peggy" Riegel left this world at 4:45 p.m., Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at her home with her immediate family at her bedside.
Born February 3, 1919 in Sioux City, Iowa to Curtis R. Stitt and June Bovee. The only daughter, she and her four brothers grew up in a single-mother home during the Great Depression. The hard lessons of the times molded her into a strong and competitive woman. She was active in sports, lettering in basketball and varsity cheerleading at East High School in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1937 she married Joseph Riegel, also of Sioux City, and began their family during the uncertainty of the times.
In 1942 the young family moved west to Arizona, then to California. The war years were spent raising two children, supporting the war effort, and maintaining their first home in Burbank, Calif. The years following the war, the family moved to West Covina, Calif., where Peggy volunteered in the parks and recreation department, as well as school activities, Girl and Boy Scouts, Job's Daughters, and her husband's business ventures. The latter prompted several moves around the west, including Las Vegas, Nev., and Lompoc and Santa Maria, Calif.
After her husband Joe's retirement from the aerospace industry, they moved to a small ranch in Sams Valley, Ore. to begin retirement. Never idle, they both entered into real estate careers, he as an appraiser and Peggy into sales. Peggy enjoyed a successful career and remained active in sales until the early 1990s. A second retirement found her joining Eastern Star, and volunteering at Providence Hospital, the Medford Visitor's Bureau, St. Andrew's Anglican Church of Jacksonville, and the Medford Jazz Jubilee. She also enjoyed playing golf, gardening, working crossword puzzles, and shopping for antiques.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; and four brothers, William, John, Malcolm, and James. She is survived by her son, Curt Riegel (Marlene), Medford; daughter, Sue Riegel Williams, Cave Junction; two grandchildren, Caryn Marie Goralka (Mike), Colo. and Curt Riegel Jr., Medford; and three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, and Katarina, all of Colorado.
Memorial services are scheduled for March 9, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., at Perl Funeral Home, Siskiyou Memorial Park, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford, Ore. Flowers may be sent to Perl Funeral Home, or donations made in her name to Friends of the Animal Shelter (FOTAS). PO Box 92, Ashland, Ore. 97520.
