Bill would let Ore. prison staff have guns in cars

SALEM, Ore. — An Oregon lawmaker has introduced a bill that would allow prison staff to keep personal guns in their vehicles while they're at work.

Current state rules prohibit firearms in any vehicles on prison property.

Republican Rep. Greg Smith of Heppner and the union representing corrections officers will hold a news conference Wednesday to discuss the bill.

Smith says prison staff need to be able to protect themselves and shouldn't have to leave their personal firearms in their homes when they're driving to and from work.
