Medford police arrested a Central Point woman Monday night after a tipster reported she had parked her Hummer on the sidewalk at the north Fred Meyer, then had come out of the store on Crater Lake Highway with a bottle of wine she started drinking as she drove off.
The concerned caller dialed 911 at about 8:40 p.m. Monday and followed the Hummer as it swerved through traffic on Poplar Drive. In turning left onto McAndrews Road, the Hummer veered onto the sidewalk and sheared off a light pole, police said in a news release. The crash knocked the vehicle's wheel off, but it drove along on its axle for what police called "a significant distance" before finally coming to a stop.
Inside the 2004 Hummer H2, Celeste Kathleen Patton, 36, of the 2500 block of Mistletoe Court, wasn't injured. She also wasn't able to pass standardized field sobriety tests, police said.
She was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, and failing to perform the duties of a driver. Police reported that she was under the influence of alcohol and prescription medication.
