Local swimmer Gentry earns six state championships

SPRINGFIELD — Eight-year-old Marcus Gentry captured six titles to lead a contingent of Superior Stingray swimmers at the 10-under state championships last weekend.

Gentry secured top finishes in the 50-meter freestyle (30.99 seconds), 100 free (1:07.39), 50 backstroke (37.33), 25 butterfly (15.58), 50 fly (33.89) and 100 individual medley (1:18.30). All his efforts in the 8-under division were personal bests.

Gentry also teamed with Steven Peng, Asa Frisbee and Antonio Orozco to win the 100 free relay and 100 medley relay.

Zoey Dodson, 10, took second in the 100 fly (1:19.17) and third in the 50 fly (33.45).

Peng, 8, claimed fourth in the 50 free (33.94).

Oregon Tech's Dixon named player of the week

LA GRANDE — Oregon Tech's Karissa Dixon, a 5-foot-10 junior, has been named the Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball player of the week for the third time this season.

The former North Medford standout combined for 40 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists in home wins against Northwest Christian and Corban last weekend.

SOU documentary "Team of Firsts" set to show Thursday

ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon University football documentary "Team of Firsts" will premier at the Ashland Street Cinema on Thursday.

The student-produced documentary follows the 2012 SOU squad that won the Frontier Conference Championship and advanced to the NAIA quarterfinals.

Show times are 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
