  • Calendar raises $10,400 for SOHS

  • How did the 12 "Women of a Certain Age" profit from the making of their great 2013 calendar, which covered events in the Rogue Valley? The calendar featured women and their pets, and the group was very aggressive in its campaign to sell the calendar and give the money to the Southern Oregon Humane Society. They ordered 1,000 calendars in the hopes of selling them all. Did they?

Holy puppy chow! The "Women of a Certain Age" 2013 calendar, inspired by the 2003 film "Calendar Girls," raised $10,400 for the Southern Oregon Humane Society. SOHS Executive Director Kenn Altine said he received the check last Sunday.
"No one had any idea it would raise that much," he said.
The calendar, which can be previewed at www.ofacertainage.org, features photographs by Judith Pavlik of local women, ages 65 to 90, all dolled up and posing with either a dog or cat. Amanda Denbeck, a student at Southern Oregon University, designed the calendar for credit.
The ladies behind the fundraiser began brainstorming in 2011 and last year came up with a business plan. They canvassed the area for people and businesses to sponsor a month or purchase advertising on the back.
The campaign was, as you said, aggressive. Sponsors were asked to sell the calendars. SOHS staff designed the website, and someone donated two billboard spaces to advertise.
Calendars sold for $10 each, and of the 1,000 printed, only about two dozen are left. These remaining calendars are available at SOHS at a discounted price of $5.
"We're looking for people who would like to take on 2014 for us," Altine said. "They can be 'Men of a Certain Age' or 'Firefighters of a Certain Body Build.' "
