  • Editor's note: This is one in a weekly series of profiles on locally owned and operated businesses in Southern Oregon.
    What do you do and how long have you been doing it? I do custom mapping for property owners, real estate agents, appraisers; outdoor recreation maps for hunting, fishing, hiking, biking and motorcycle routes for outfitters, guides and lodges; military mapping as well as travel and tourism. I can also provide wide format printing, if they have their own digital file, for a banner or large picture. I've been mapping for nearly 10 years and started the business in 2010.
    How long have you lived in the Rogue Valley? We relocated here from Billings, Mont., in October. We came here when we were vacationing and fell in love with it.
    What inspired you to go into this line of work? I started doing mapping for Hall and Hall, a farm and ranch real estate company that sells all over the world. I did the mapping there 81/2; years before deciding to strike out on my own.
    What decision or action would you change if you could do it again? I wish I would've started earlier. For quite some time, while I was doing the mapping I could see the need for a service such as that. I knew I could do it on my own, but I was afraid to take the plunge. It was the fear of the unknown. Can I really do this and will it work? Can I be successful on my own, or should I stay and work for someone else?
    What's the toughest business decision you've made? It was a tough decision to leave my regular, full-time, stable job and concentrate on my own business. Leaving a stable income to boost my business and make it grow and hope I could generate the income that's going to support me on my own. When we decided to move over here, I wondered if relocating the business was going to hurt my business or keep going as I have been. It's been a good move because it's something I do from my home and I map all over the country anyway, because it's done electronically and I can communicate by email.
    Who are your competitors? There are mapping companies such as Raven Maps, where its maps are more art detailed for showcase. Mine are more custom to what the customer wants for property they own or property a broker is listing. Mine are more of working maps with a specific purpose.
    What are your goals? I hope to get to where I can get a storefront and have my equipment where people can come in and see various maps we've done and have a few employees. I can provide maps for anywhere in North America.
    What training or education did you need? When I started working at Hall and Hall, they trained me to do maps. I took a variety of courses on software and general geographic information system work.
    What's your advice for budding entrepreneurs? If you have an idea and think you can do it, don't be afraid just go for it.
