  • Group still aids brain injury patients

  • A few years ago, the Mail Tribune published names and contact information of local support groups for people with brain injuries. Do these organizations still exist? I'd like to volunteer to help such a worthwhile cause. Any information would be much appreciated.

Good to hear that you want to spend your free time helping people in need, Dan.
The Mail Tribune still publishes support groups. Check the full listing here: http://goo.gl/dSpMk.
Among them is a group called Brainstormers, which is a support network for people suffering a variety of brain injuries.
Lorita Cushman, the group's facilitator, said the group meets the first Tuesday of every month from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The group normally meets at Providence Medford Medical Center. However, construction work at the hospital has moved the meetings to the Medford Lion's Club at 228 N. Holly Street.
Cushman said the number of people who attend the meetings fluctuates, but usually averages about 14.
"We also have guest speakers and occupational therapists give presentations," Cushman said.
The group allows those with brain injuries to talk about their day-to-day experiences and struggles, Cushman said.
"Sometimes people need to vent about their frustrations," Cushman said. "Brain injury is a difficult thing to deal with. However, we also talk about the positives and how some people have made gains."
The group is looking for volunteers who can help people fill out complex paperwork and give rides to the grocery store for those unable to drive, Cushman said.
There also is a yearly rafting trip in August that requires volunteer help, she said.
