  • PORTLAND — Unfortunately for the North Medford boys basketball team, history repeated itself on Tuesday.
Westview cruised past the Black Tornado 75-54 in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs at Westview High, marking its fourth postseason win over North in the last five years.
The sixth-seeded Black Tornado, which lost to Jesuit in the state semifinals last season and to the Wildcats in the semifinals the year before, couldn't match third-seeded Westview's hot shooting or physicality.
The Wildcats canned 20 of 29 field-goal attempts in the second half and made 30 of their 55 shots on the night. They also earned a 40-29 rebounding edge over North, which trailed 26-18 at halftime.
"Our defense in the first half was sound, but we just didn't rebound the ball well," North head coach Scott Plankenhorn said. "In the second half, (Westview) got some transition baskets that loosened things up for them and they starting making shots.
"We stopped getting back on defense and they made us pay."
Garrett Knox paced the Black Tornado (14-11) with 11 points, with Oshea Bailey and Tristen Holmes chipping in 10 points apiece and Aaron Browne-Moore adding eight points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore forward Alex Carrick recorded 20 points on 8-for-8 shooting and Dyrall Goods added 17 points for Westview (14-10), which buried 11 of its 17 shots in the third quarter after North's Brian Bush knocked down a 3 to open the half and bring his team to within five points.
