  • Fred Meyer stores has issued a recall on five breads sold in its stores after discovering the products may contain pieces of plastic, according to a news release.
The discovery was made at the company's bakery in Clackamas, which instituted a recall at Fred Meyer stores in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
"We are unsure at this point how this could occur but are investigating," the release said.
Fred Meyer officials said the hard plastic pieces were not small in size and would not go unnoticed by people who eat the bread.
"What we've found at this point is not something someone could have accidentally swallowed," said Melinda Merrill, Fred Meyer community affairs manager. "They were big, noticeable pieces."
The products were pulled from store shelves Tuesday. The recall affected a "few-thousand" loaves of product, Merrill said.
The origin of the plastic was still under investigation Wednesday. Merrill said the company's bakery has several system checks in place to ensure consumer safety, and that the incident is unusual.
"Our bakery is really button-down and high-tech in that regard. We're really taking a look at this seriously," she said.
The products were delivered to 123 stores Friday, Sunday and Monday.
"We haven't drilled down to specific stores, so we're putting out the word to everyone," Merrill said.
Fred Meyer Rewards cardholders who purchased the affected product should all receive a phone message about the recall. Anyone who has purchased these breads can bring them back to the store for a refund or exchange.
