Spartans fall short in series opener to San Diego

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls scored three goals in the final period to pull away for a 5-1 victory over the Southern Oregon Spartans in the opener of a three-game series in WSHL hockey Friday.

Southern Oregon pulled to within 2-1 on Sebastian Romeo's goal off an assist from MJ Melanson with 11 minutes gone in the second period.

The Spartans trailed 2-1 entering the third period but the Gulls scored the first of three goals at the 3:40 mark of the stanza on a short-handed shot by Drew DePalma. Goals by Justin Lazalde and William Parker on a power play sealed the victory for the Gulls.

The Spartans were called for 13 infractions resulting in 42 penalty minutes. In the third period, Southern Oregon was called for seven penalties, including an ejection for Kevin Edwards.

Gulls keeper Reed Kinsey stopped all but one of the Spartans' 22 shots, while Austin Brihn recorded 29 saves for Southern Oregon.
