CORVALLIS — Tyler Smith singled with one out in the 10th inning to send the sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team to a 2-1 win in front of 2,776 fans Friday night at Goss Stadium.
Jake Rodriguez opened the inning with a single and moved to second when Andy Peterson reached on a bunt single. Joey Jansen moved both over, paving the way for Smith's game-winning RBI. It sent the Beavers to a perfect 9-0 record while Bryant dropped to 0-3-1 on the year.
Max Engelbrekt earned the win after getting the final out of the game in the 10th. Scott Schultz had opened the inning and ended the game having worked 32/3 innings, allowing two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
The duo kept the Beavers' bullpen ERA to 0.00 in 34 innings on the year. The club's overall ERA, meanwhile, dropped to 1.10 after starting out the game at 1.12.
Salvadore Lisanti took the loss for Bryant and is 0-1 on the year. The right-handed reliever scattered four hits and a run in 21/3 innings of work. He was the Bulldogs' third pitcher of the game after starter Peter Kelich allowed three hits while holding the Beavers scoreless in five innings.
Matt Boyd made his third start for the Beavers and did not figure in the decision after being relieved by Schultz in the seventh. Boyd allowed one run on eight hits while he struck out seven and walked two.
Bryant took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when Daniel St. George singled up the middle off Boyd, enabling Jordan Mountford to score from third. Two innings later, however, the Beavers evened the game at one. Jerad Casper reached second on a fly ball that was dropped in right. Nick Rulli pinch ran for him and scored when Rodriguez stroked a two-out single up the middle.
Rodriguez, Smith and Peterson all had two hits for the Beavers, who finished with eight overall. Bryant had 10.
Oregon State and Bryant continue the series with a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m. and the second game starts 30-45 minutes after the completion of Game 2.
NO. 17 CAL STATE FULLERTON 8, NO. 14 OREGON 2 — At Fullerton, Calif., Cal State Fullerton scored three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to break open a tight game and hand Oregon a loss in the series opener at Goodwin Field.
Ryon Healy went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Ducks (7-2), while Brett Thomas was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI and J.J. Altobelli went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Jake Reed dropped to 1-2 on the season, allowing eight runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings. Thomas Eshelman (3-0) got the win for the Titans, allowing just four Oregon hits while striking out six in a complete-game victory.
Healy gave Oregon a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI double that scored Thomas from first. Thomas started the rally with a two-out hit by pitch, while Healy's RBI was his team-best eighth of the season.
Cal State Fullerton answered in the bottom of the fourth. Richy Pedroza led off the inning with the Titans' first hit of the game, advanced to second on a walk by J.D. Davis and scored on an Anthony Hutting single to right field.
The Titans took their first lead in the bottom of the fifth with three runs.
Oregon and Cal State Fullerton will meet in Game 2 of the three-game series at 6 tonight.
