Man hospitalized with stab wound in his neck

Medford police question suspect, investigate South Columbus Avenue crime scene

A man was hospitalized with a stab wound to the neck Saturday night after an altercation on South Columbus Avenue in Medford.

Details were sketchy, but police believe they have the suspect in custody, Medford police Sgt. D.J. Graham said.

Officers were called to the area of South Columbus Avenue and West Prune Street for a report of a man suffering a potentially serious stab wound to the throat.

When the first officers arrived they found the victim bleeding in the road and the suspect nearby.

Emergency crews treated the victim on the street before loading him into an ambulance and rushing him to the hospital.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident, Graham said.

The status of the victim is unknown, though there were some hopeful signs he might survive the attack.

"He was conscious and talking when he was taken to the hospital," Graham said.

The suspect, meanwhile, was taken to police headquarters, where he was interviewed by detectives.

Police shut down South Columbus for several blocks and roped off a large area to conduct the crime scene analysis.

Graham said the goal is to determine exactly where the stabbing occurred.

"It could have happened anywhere in this area," Graham said. "We are not sure where it occurred at this point."

It was a difficult crime scene lockdown in the early stages because that section of South Columbus is busy in the early evening.

The relationship between the victim and suspect is not known at this time. Graham did say there was a significant age gap between the two.

Officers and detectives rounded up a sizeable group of witnesses and interviewed them along the street. The area surrounding the crime scene is lined with apartments, with many of the resident filing out onto the sidewalk to watch the situation unfold.
