Screamin' Tele Lizard Classic is more than a race
Ashland’s Kirk Austbo drags a lizard tail around a turn en route to winning the 17th annual Screamin’ Tele Lizard Classic on Mount Ashland Saturday. To see more photos from the event, go to www.mailtribune.com/photos.
They come every year at this time, a costumed coterie of cold-weather congregants. They descend on the Mt. Ashland Ski Area for the Screamin' Tele Lizard Classic, which is billed as a telemark race.
There's racing, that's true, and the previous year's winner has the (dubious) honor of wearing a giant lizard tail, a distinction that fell Saturday to Ashland's Kirk Austbo.
But the Tele Lizard also is a costume party, with racers donning outfits to match each year's theme, which Saturday was "The Lizard in Wonderland!"
Austbo must get some extra juice from that big, green tail, because he'll be wearing it again next year after winning the race again Saturday.
