Central Point man killed after being struck by two cars

A Central Point man was killed Sunday night after he attempted to cross Table Rock Road and was hit by two cars in a matter of seconds, police said.

Frank Charlton, 54, was first hit around 8:30 p.m. when he stepped into Table Rock Road's northbound lane of traffic near the Whiskey River Cafe & Lounge, 6463 Table Rock Road.

A Honda Civic driven north by 19-year-old Jesse Meadows, of Eagle Point, struck Charlton. Police said Meadows was driving about 45 mph, which is the posted speed limit. He slammed on his brakes and tried to swerve, but could not avoid striking the man. Charlton was hit and thrown into the southbound lane, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department said in a news release today.

Meadows stopped, turned on his hazard lights and called 911, police said. He also tried to stop traffic.

Central Point resident Jacob Lyon, 21, was driving south in a Ford Focus when he saw a large object lying in the road police said. He slammed on his brakes but was unable to stop before hitting Charlton.

"It's a huge tragedy and very unfortunate," said Jackson County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Andrea Carlson.

The Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction — STAR — Team shut down Table Rock Road for several hours while the accident was investigated. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department's medical examiner pronounced Charlton dead at the scene.

Neither driver was found to be at fault in the crash. Both consented to roadside testing that revealed they weren't under in the influence of intoxicants, Carlson said. Both were traveling at around the posted speed limit. No citations were issued.

Results from toxicology tests to determine if Charlton was under the influence will not be available for six to eight weeks, officials said.

Officials stressed the importance of taking additional precautions when crossing the road at night. Pedestrians should cross in well-lit areas and should use marked crosswalks if available.
