Spartans cap off season with victory

Southern Oregon to host playoff series

ESCONDIDO, Calif. — The Southern Oregon Spartans hockey team finished of its regular season on a winning note Sunday night.

The Spartans smoothed out a see-saw battle with a pair of goals early in the third period to vanquish the San Diego Gulls, 5-3.

The Gulls (23-18-2 WSHL) got the best of the three-game series by winning the first two against the Spartans (26-19-1), who next host the Ogden Mustangs in a playoff series March 15-17 at The RRRink. The March 15 and March 16 games are at 7:35 p.m., with March 17's contest scheduled for 3:05 p.m. if needed. The winner advances to the divisional and league championship.

Anthony Golio broke the 3-all deadlock with a goal on an assist from Petr Novak to give the Spartans a 4-3 edge. Just 21/2 minutes later, Novak hooked up Mike Kowicki on a tallied power play goal, giving the Spartans a 5-3 cushion.

Also scoring for the Spartans were Jeff Salzbrunn, MJ Melanson and Joe Bordak.
