  • Post office is staying put at new location

  • When the Medford post office relocated to its Riverside Avenue location a year or so ago, I assumed it was a permanent move. However, as I drove down Riverside the other day, I noticed large "For Sale or Lease" signs on each end of the property where the P.O. is located. Is this just a temporary home? Are they planning to move somewhere else now?

The Medford post office, which relocated to its present digs in June after decades at its old location off West Eighth Street, is not about to have a new mailing address, Robert.
"We are not moving," responded Medford Postmaster Dan Becker. "The lot where we are now leasing is split into three portions. We are leasing the middle one. The owner is trying to sell or lease the other portions on each end."
In fact, the U.S. Postal Service signed a 10-year lease with two five-year options when it moved into the new 4,800-square-foot building between Ninth and 10th streets.
The Medford post office had been at 333 W. Eighth St. for more than 40 years before the move. The Postal Service had determined it no longer needed that much space after relocating to Sage Road and combining sorting and distribution operations. Jackson County subsequently bought the building from the Postal Service.
"We'd hate to move again," Becker said. "You get customers comfortable where you are. We like to be stable."
