  • The 45-member Jefferson State Choral Coalition, directed by Kirby Shaw, will present "A Cappella III," a program that promises a lively mix of music by Irving Berlin, The Beatles, Three Dog Night and more, at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland.
    The choir also will perform spirituals, blues, a Celtic ballad and more, and a quartet featuring Kirby, Markita Shaw, Laura Grosz and Bill Southworth will perform "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring."
    Shaw is a prolific composer and performer. He's scatted with such notables as Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Chris Calloway, Jon Hendricks and others. He's also a member of the jazz a cappella quartet Just 4 Kicks.
    He's composed thousands of choral arrangements and compositions and performed throughout the United States, as well as Canada, Australia, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Hungary and Spain.
    Shaw holds degrees in music education and choral composition from San Jose State University and a doctorate in choral conducting from the University of Washington. As an educator, he's created hundreds of instructional recordings, along with two of his own solo albums.
    Tickets cost $10, $5 for students, and are available by calling 541-552-6899. Tickets will be available at the door for cash only.
