  • CORVALLIS — Keeping the North Valley boys basketball team's state championship hopes and perfect season alive was no easy task in Thursday's Class 4A state semifinal.
    Kevin Brazille and Cameron Lyon gave the Knights what they needed to hold off La Salle Prep for a 50-45 victory, launching the Knights into today's state title game at Gill Coliseum.
    The Knights (26-0) square off against Cascade (26-1) today at 8:30 p.m. at Gill Coliseum for the Class 4A state crown.
    The Knights traded baskets and the lead with the Falcons until early in the third quarter when JJ Chirnside's lay-up put the Skyline Conference champions up 29-28.
    Although the Knights never lost their lead again, the Falcons never made it easy to maintain.
    Brazille and Lyon knocked down two free throws apiece with under 30 seconds to play to secure the victory
    Brazille poured in 21 points on a 7-for-12 shooting effort and Lyon tallied 17 points on a 6-for-10 effort. Chirnside pulled down 11 rebounds to go with his five points.
    La Salle Prep's Sean Hays went a sizzling 12-for-16 from the floor for 25 points and added nine rebounds. Jacob McGraw had 13 points.

    SPRINGFIELD, HERMISTON MOVE ON — At Eugene, Mercedes Russell had 29 points and top-ranked Springfield defeated Lebanon 71-33 in the quarterfinals of the OSAA Class 5A girls tournament.
    The Millers (22-3) advanced to today's semifinals at Matthew Knight Arena, where they'll face fifth-ranked Hermiston (17-8), a 55-46 winner over Bend.
    Third-ranked Willamette (21-4), which beat Milwaukie 58-38, goes into the other semifinal against seventh-ranked Corvallis (17-7), which defeated West Albany 29-26.
    MAZAMA IN TITLE GAME — At Corvallis, Megan Morris had 15 points and top-ranked Mazama advanced to the OSAA Class 4A state championship game with a 54-39 semifinal victory over Cascade.
    Hanna Reynolds added 11 points for the Vikings (26-2), who will face third-ranked La Grande (22-5) in the title game today. The Tigers defeated Sutherlin 66-56 in the late semifinal game.
