Gwen Thomas of Ashland celebrated her 100th birthday Saturday, March 9, 2013, with a reception at Mountain View Retirement Home.
She was born March 10, 1913, in Moulton, Wash. Her family moved to Yacolt, Wash., when she was young. She graduated from high school there when she was 15 and attended Oregon State University for two years.
Her first date with her husband was climbing up Mount Hood to play in the snow, and she married Harold Thomas Dec. 24, 1936, in Vancouver, Wash. The couple moved to Ashland around 1944, and together they had three children: Kermit, Karen and Kip.
She was voted Woman of the Year in 1954 by an American Association of University Women poll. She volunteered at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, was active with P.E.O. Sisterhood and worked at Ashland Drug for 50 years.
She continues to be active with a bridge club. She has five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
