UC Irvine's Young shares top freshman award

Former Phoenix High standout Alex Young was named Big West Conference co-freshman of the year on Monday after a standout first season with UC Irvine.

Young was one of four UC Irvine players to be acknowledged by the league office and shared the freshman honor with Hawaii's Isaac Fotu.

The Anteaters point guard set a UC Irvine freshman single-season record with 132 assists and enters the Big West Conference tournament among the league leaders in assists (second at 4.1 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.6 per game).

The 6-foot-1 Young also averages 9.2 points per game for UC Irvine (18-14, 11-7 Big West). The fourth-seeded Anteaters open the Big West tournament with a quarterfinal contest against No. 5 seed Hawaii at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

The 11 conference wins were the program's most in 10 years, since the 2002-03 team finished 13-5. The 18 overall victories were the most since the 2007-08 squad went 18-16.

Also receiving Big West honors for UC Irvine were senior guard Daman Starring (All-Big West second team), senior post Adam Folker (All-Big West honorable mention, "Best Hustle" award) and sophomore post Will Davis II (best defensive player).

Long Beach State's James Ennis was named the conference's player of the year, while Corey Hawkins of UC Davis was named newcomer of the year and Long Beach State's Dan Monson was named coach of the year.
