Ogden evens series with Spartans

Scoring five goals in the first period typically is a recipe for success but it didn't pan out that way for the Southern Oregon Spartans during Saturday's first-round playoff game against Ogden at The RRRink.

Southern Oregon opened a 5-3 lead through one period but the visiting Mustangs controlled the action from that point to score a 7-5 victory and even the best-of-three Western States Hockey League series.

Kevin Edwards and Joe Bordak each scored a pair of goals for the Spartans (27-21), with Jeff Salzbrunn netting the other. Dan Doyle assisted on three of the goals.

Trevor Simonick scored two third-period goals and Christian Kraus added the other to help Ogden complete its rally. Eryn Siracusa also scored twice for the Mustangs, who got first-period goals from Dusty Wyatt and Sean Haltam.

The deciding Game 3 is 3:05 p.m. today at The RRRink.

Ogden Mustangs 3 1 3 — 7

Southern Oregon Spartans 5 0 0 — 5
