  • TALENT — The undefeated Phoenix baseball team collected 30 hits scored 27 runs as it swept Etna, Calif., 11-10 and 16-11 in nonleague action at Colver Field on Wednesday.
With Game 1 tied at 10 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Andrew Reynoso tripled with one out before Jordan Pond drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Justin McCreadie went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, Bailey Baker 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Zach Kentner 2-for-3 and Calvin Decker 2-for-4 for the Pirates (4-0) in Game 1.
Phoenix trailed by a run in the seventh inning of the opener before Baker's fielder's choice evened the score.
Kentner and Reynoso combined to allow 15 hits and one walk in Game 1.
"We gave them a few unearned runs and woke up," Phoenix head coach Bill Hutchinson said. "When we allow some runs to happen we respond to it. Every time they've taken a punch they've thrown one back."
In the second game, Pond finished 4-for-4 with three RBIs and Aaron Hutchinson was 3-for-3 with four RBIs as the Pirates used a nine-run fourth inning to overcome a three-run deficit and capture the lead.
Reynoso was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Travis Stainbrook 2-for-3 and Baker 2-for-4 in Game 2.
Kyle Botermans, making his first start as a freshman, struck out six and allowed 10 hits and one walk in 41/3 innings to earn the victory.
Phoenix, which combined for 14 stolen bases on Wednesday, went winless last season.
"We have played some very good baseball but we haven't put together seven innings yet," coach Hutchinson said.
