Clear sign of commitment gets a big 'yes'

Shawn Kyker has his marriage proposal appear on electronic board at busy Medford intersection while popping the question

For months, 37-year-old Shawn Kyker, a manager at Sizzler, has wanted to use the reader board at Superior Fitness near his workplace to propose to his girlfriend.

But when he went to get the message programmed in on Wednesday, March 20 — the first day of spring — the woman who programs the sign was out of town.

So it was time for Plan B, Kyker contacted Jamie Sparks, who operates a color electronic sign at the corner of Biddle and McAndrews roads, the longtime former site of a Blockbuster video store.

At no charge, Sparks programmed the words, "Lyndsey will you marry me?" into the sign on Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m., for Kyker's romantic proposal.

That afternoon, Kyker picked up his girlfriend Lyndsey Icenhower, 30, also of Medford, and drove to the Blue Sky Plaza across the street from the sign and parked.

"We walked out on McAndrews and I dropped down to one knee and proposed," said Kyker. "I said you can look behind you."

That's when Icenhower saw the message on the sign and immediately said "yes."

"She was blown away," said Kyker.

The couple have been together for a little more than a year, and have made plans to tie the knot in Reno near the end of May.

"For the last couple of months I have been trying to figure out how I wanted to do it. I wanted to do something different," said Kyker.

When asked if he is a romantic, Kyker replied, "I don't know, I guess I try to be."
