Steelheads take 1-0 series lead on Spartans

McCALL, Idaho — The Idaho Junior Steelheads scored three goals in the first period and goalie Blake Mendenhall delivered a 20-save shutout as the Steelheads took Game 1 of a best-of-three second-round WSHL playoff series against the Southern Oregon Spartans, 4-0, Friday at McCalls Manchester Ice.

Tyler Kruenegel scored off assists by Dominik Gabaj and Stefan Brucato barely a minute into the game, and Kirk Van Arkel and Cole Larson added two more goals late in the first to give the Steelheads a 3-0 cushion.

Gabaj also assisted on Van Arkel's goal, which came with about four and a half minutes to go in the period.

The Steelheads can clinch the series with a win tonight. A victory by the Spartans would force a third and deciding game Sunday.

Idaho out-shot Southern Oregon 43-20.
