  • BEND — Authorities shot and killed two cougars roaming a heavily populated neighborhood in Oregon.
Crook County sheriff's deputy Mitch Madden says that the animals were killed Sunday afternoon on the southeast outskirts of Prineville.
When law officers arrived, Madden says children were heard playing in the area.
He tells KTVZ that the adolescent animals posed "a severe public safety hazard."
Madden says that a state wildlife biologist later determined that the cougars "were malnourished and possibly in the area searching for a food source."
The animals weighed 40-50 pounds each.
