Authorities in two states are asking for help finding a former director of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics.

Max McIntosh, 75, who retired from a 39-year VA career in March 2012, was reported missing Tuesday by family members who live outside the area, Medford police said. His family had called repeatedly, but hadn't been able to contact him for several days.

When Medford police started to search, investigators discovered that McIntosh's white Ford Explorer was found abandoned at around 2 p.m. Friday near Lake Shasta, Calif. It was impounded on Sunday.

When the Shasta County Sheriff's Office learned it belonged to a missing person, deputies launched a search of the surrounding area, police said.

Investigators think that McIntosh left his home in the 1700 block of Evan Circle in Medford on Friday.

Investigators believe McIntosh is probably somewhere in Shasta County, near where his vehicle was found. Police do not know why McIntosh left his home or where he was going, Medford Detective Tony Young said. They don't suspect dementia or foul play, Young added.

"Right now we're looking up his bank and phone records to try to piece together where he might have gone," Young said.

They hope locals in the Rogue Valley might be able to help them piece the puzzle together.

"We really think he drove the vehicle down there, but we want to get the word out just in case he ended up back here, somehow," Young said.

According to Young, family members reported that McIntosh had mentioned visiting family in Missouri.

Anyone with information on McIntosh's whereabouts or who has had contact with him is asked to contact Young at 541-770-4784.
