PHOENIX, Ariz. — Colton Westfall tossed a one-hit shutout and North Medford scored all of its runs in the fifth inning to beat Pueblo West, Colo., 5-0, and lock up third place in the All-Star Division of the Coach Bob Invitational Thursday at Sandra Day O'Connor High School.
Westfall, a sophomore, lost his no-hit bid — it would have been his second as a varsity pitcher — when Pueblo West's No. 9 hitter reached on an infield single with one out in the sixth inning. He finished with five strikeouts, two walks and his first shutout of the season to improve to 3-0.
"(Westfall) was pretty dominant," said North Medford head coach Brett Wolfe, whose team improved to 7-1, including 3-1 in the tournament. "He used his fastball early and then he commanded his breaking pitch. He set the tone for us, worked fast — we were in and out on defense pretty quick thanks to his rhythm and tempo."
North Medford, which lost its first game of the tournament Monday before rebounding with three straight wins, broke a scoreless tie when Micah Brown drew a bases-loaded walk to score Christian Gillis with one out in the fifth. David Crofton and Hayden Evans followed with back-to-back RBI singles, which proved to be plenty of insurance for Westfall.
Austin Zavala was 2-for-2 with two walks and a run, Gillis 1-for-2 with a run and two walks and Brett Pearson 1-for-2 with a run to lead North Medford at the plate.
The Black Tornado wraps up its Arizona trip today with a game against Piedra Vista, N.M.,
"It's hard to be away from home, but it's also a good experience and we were able to stay focused and play through it," Wolfe said.
