Murphy in hunt at AJGA qualifier

MESA, Ariz. — Rogue River's Kevin Murphy is in the hunt after Day 1 of the American Junior Golf Association qualifier in the Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic at Longbow Golf Club on Friday.

Murphy carded a 1-over-par 72 to pull into a tie for 15th in the field of 96.

Also competing, St. Mary's Dylan Wu is tied for 82nd place with an 8-over 79.

The top nine boys, ages 12-18, from a field of 80 earn an opportunity to play in future AJGA Open tournaments by qualifying. Players have a chance to earn scholarships and college exposure through their play in the events.

Murphy had two bogeys and a birdie in his round. He tees off his second round today at 11:30 a.m.

Wu begins his round at 12:42 p.m. He had three birdies but suffered triple bogeys on hole Nos. 13 and 15 to go with five bogeys.
