Spartans fall short against Idaho

McCALL, IDAHO — The Southern Oregon Spartans' season came to an end on Saturday with a 3-1 loss to the Idaho Junior Steelheads in the Final Four of the Thorne Cup.

The Cup was the last phase of the Western States Hockey League playoffs.

The Spartans fell behind 3-0 before Max Rasmussen netted a goal on assists by Robert Donovan and Tommy Bennett at the 13:48 mark of the third period.

Kirk Van Arkel, Filip Kasaly and Dallas Crum all scored for the Steelheads prior to that.

Goalkeeper Austin Brihn recorded 23 saves for Southern Oregon, which was outshot by Idaho 26-24.

In the other playoff contest, the Bay Area Seals downed the El Paso Rhinos 7-2.


AJGA QUALIFIER — At Mesa, Ariz., Rogue River's Kevin Murphy is tied for 30th after the second round of the American Junior Golf Association qualifier in the Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic at Longbow Golf Club on Saturday.

Murphy recorded a 3-over-par 74 to find himself tied with five others with 146 totals. He shot a 72 on Friday.

Also competing, St. Mary's Dylan Wu is tied for 46th with a 148 total after carding a 69 with five birdies on Saturday. He fired a 79 a day earlier, but just made the cut with his Day 2 efforts.

Ryan Han of Hollister, Calif., leads with a 137 total. He recorded a 64 on Saturday.
