Drivers parking on certain downtown Medford streets now can pay for parking using their smartphones.
The City Council approved the pay-by-phone option in February, and it is now active.
Parking on Central Avenue between Eighth and 10th streets and on Ninth Street between Riverside Avenue and Front Street still is free for one hour, but drivers can pay $1 via the phone system and park for two hours.
The system previously was in use in downtown parking lots.
Sign up for a free PaybyPhone account at www.paybyphone.com or m.paybyphone.com. The site offers links to apps for iPhones, Androids and BlackBerries. Users also can call 1-866-234-7275.
Once users have provided credit card information to PaybyPhone, they can pay for parking by simply going to the app or calling to enter a parking location number found on signs on the streets or in the lots, and their license plate number.
