  • John (Jack) Ross Reynolds, M.D. died in his home in Ashland on February 18, 2013 at the age of 90. He was born in Wilmington, Del. to Blythe M. Reynolds and Florence R. Reynolds and was raised in New Jersey.
    Dr. Reynolds graduated from Princeton University in 1943 and from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1947. He married Hanna Van Dyke in 1945 and completed a residency in internal medicine at Geisinger Memorial Hospital in Danville, Pa. He moved with his family to The Dalles, Ore. in 1954 and practiced internal medicine there before relocating to Ashland in 1956 where he practiced his specialty for over 30 years, retiring in 1990. Jack and Hanna had divorced and he married Betty Jo Keil Soderberg in 1971.
    Dr. Reynolds served as physician in the U.S. Navy on the ice breaker USS Edisto in the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and remained in the Navy Reserve as a physician until his military retirement in 1979.
    In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Reynolds was an active member of the southern Oregon community. He served as staff physician as well as adjunct teacher of several ornithology courses at Southern Oregon College and helped implement the campus student health program. He helped initiate the first ambulance service in Ashland as well as training the first EMT's for that service. He was a member of the Jackson County Medical Assoc. and the Oregon Medical Assoc. He was a member of the Ashland Lions Club and the Rogue Valley Audubon Society. He was an Eagle Scout and had served as an assistant scout master.
    His avocations included ranching, farming, gardening, birding, wildlife study and advocacy. Until his decline in health he was an active part of a Jackson County Extension Service sponsored group that studied sheep, cattle, range and pasture management.
    He is survivored by his wife, Betty Jo; daughters, Meredith Reynolds, Priscilla Saul (Rick, son Jake), Sarah Challman (Shady, children Phoebe and McKay) of Ashland; Jean R. Moseley of Portland; Ellen Wopat (Dr. Richard, children Katie, Dr. Ross and Maggie) of Lebanon; Dr. Michael Reynolds (Tina, sons Eric, Ben and Jackson) of Stayton; step-daughter Heidi Kraus (Bob, children Jacob and Chelsea) of Portland; step-sons Steve Soderberg (children Jennifer and Trenton) of Medford, John Soderberg (children John and Jessica) of Louisville Ky. and Dr. Reynolds' sister Jean Drake of Greenbrae, Ca.

    A celebration of Dr. Reynolds' life will be held April 20 from 1pm to 3pm at the Ashland Community Center on Winburn Way.
