Resident seeing red as parked cars block mailbox

To my knowledge, you are not supposed to park within 20 feet from any mailbox. We have had some people park in front of ours and sometimes our mail is not delivered because they are in the way.

Is it legal for me to paint the curb red for about 20 feet and stencil in white "No Parking" at my own expense?

We contacted public works officials in the city of Medford and out in the county to answer your question, Carl.

They agree that you are not permitted to paint the curb in front of your home.

"In general, that's something we would not encourage," said Brice Perkins, Medford public works operations manager.

In fact, if you paint the curb in front of your house, you'll most likely be asked to remove the paint should a city official spot it.

The only painting you're allowed to do is a small spot on either side of your driveway entrance, which will preclude people from blocking your path, Brice said.

"You can paint either side of the entrance yellow for a few feet each way," he said.

The same goes for out in the county, according to Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman Gary Leaming.

"I would suggest calling the post office or maybe law enforcement if you have issues with someone blocking your driveway," Leaming said.

Leaming said it might be a good idea to attempt to contact the problem drivers by politely asking them to refrain from parking too near your mailbox.
