  • BERKELEY, Calif. — Tommy Thorpe allowed just three hits to lead No. 16 Oregon to a 3-2 Pac-12 Conference win over California at Evans Diamond on Friday night.
Thorpe, making his first career Game 1 series start, allowed just one hit out of the infield. California's first hit came on a bunt in the first inning and the third hit was a high chopper to third base in the seventh inning.
The Ducks' lefthander struck out seven in 71/3 innings, while allowing two runs (one earned). Jimmie Sherfy pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his 10th save.
J.J. Altobelli and Brett Thomas led the Ducks' offense with two hits apiece. Altobelli was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Thomas was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
OREGON STATE 1, UTAH 0 — At Corvallis, Matt Boyd gave up two hits as Oregon State blanked Utah to open a three-game series.
Boyd struck out eight against the Utes and became just the second Oregon State (26-6 overall, 8-2 Pac-12 Conference) pitcher in the last 12 years to record multiple shutouts in one season, matching Sam Gaviglio's two in 2011.
The Utes (14-15, 4-9) managed just four baserunners against Boyd and the lefty threw to just two batters over the minimum as two innings were ended by Jake Rodriguez's arm on stolen base attempts.
Boyd (7-1 overall) is 3-0 with a 0.91 ERA at Goss Stadium this season. In 40 career appearances at home — and five starts — he is 8-1 with a 1.07 ERA.
