  • Fred Spiegelberg turned Medford Senior High School into a football dynasty, prompting a grateful city to name a stadium after him.
    According to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, Spiegelberg followed Bill Bowerman as coach at Medford and led the Black Tornado to 253 wins and four state titles in 31 years. In 1971, he was named National Coach of the Year.
    Medford renamed its stadium Spiegelberg Stadium in 1986 when South Medford High opened. Spiegelberg was inducted to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and the National Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990.
