KLAMATH FALLS — Phoenix received outstanding pitching performances from Zack Kentner and Aaron Hutchinson but came up short in both ends of a Skyline Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday.
The Pirates lost to Klamath Union, 3-2 and 4-3, at the Steen Sports Park.
In Game 1, Phoenix (6-5, 0-3 Sky) scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead.
Jordan Pond hit a one-out double in the opening frame, Kentner singled and Pond scored on Justin McCreadie's ground out.
Travis Treadway drove in Christian Hay with a double in the second inning for the Pirates.
Klamath Union won the game on Marcus Paschal's walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh.
Treadway had two doubles to pace the Phoenix attack.
Phoenix outhit the Pelicans, 8 to 6, but stranded six runners in scoring position.
In the second game, Phoenix again jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings.
Andrew Reynoso opened the first with a double and came around to score on ground outs by Pond and Kentner. Hutchinson got hit by a pitch in the second and scored on an error.
Klamath Union capitalized on three Phoenix errors to score all four runs in the fifth inning.
Singles by Treadway, Reynoso and Pond accounted for the Pirates' final run in the seventh.
Reynoso reached base four times.
Hutchinson (0-3) allowed just three hits, struck out three and allowed no earned runs in going the distance.
"The first game we stranded too many runners in scoring position and the second game we made too many errors," said Phoenix coach Bill Hutchinson. "Both Aaron and Zack pitched lights out and we turned five double plays. We played well but just not well enough."
