A Washington state man led three law enforcement agencies on a chase through Medford Wednesday morning, using three modes of transportation before police found him hiding in a shed and arrested him.
Anthony Jonathon Allen Byam, 21, of Enumclaw, Wash., was arrested on charges of unauthorized use of a vehicle, felony attempt to elude in a vehicle, reckless driving, attempt to elude on foot, resisting arrest, second-degree criminal mischief and fraudulent use of a credit card. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail, where he was being held on $56,000 bail Wednesday.
An Oregon State Police trooper first attempted to pull Byam over for traffic violations and suspicious activity at 1:50 a.m. near East McAndrews Road and Central Avenue, police said.
Byam, who was driving a 1991 Honda Accord, didn't pull over and sped away. Police said Byam eventually lost control of the car near the corner of East McAndrews Road and Crater Lake Avenue and crashed into a road sign and curb near a gas station.
Byam ran from the car and snatched a mountain bike leaning against a fence near the gas station. He pedaled away with the trooper still in pursuit. The bike had two flat tires, but Byam continued to travel eastbound on the bike until police caught up.
The trooper used a stun gun on Byam, but it had no effect. He jumped from the bike and ran for several blocks. Police lost sight of him in a nearby neighborhood as he ran through several backyards.
Medford police and the Jackson County Sheriff's Department came to assist and set up a perimeter in the area. At 2:15 a.m., police found Byam hiding in a shed in the backyard of a Grand Avenue home. He was arrested and taken to jail. Byam told police he stole the Honda about 20 minutes before OSP attempted to pull him over. The car's owner was later contacted, and she confirmed the theft.
Local OSP officials said it's one of the more extensive chases they've been a part of.
"He certainly didn't succumb very quickly," Sgt. David Beck said.
