Community yard sales will keep bargain-hunters (s)hopping

Kicking off the unofficial season for bargain hunters, citywide yard sales arrive each year between April showers and spring and summer cleanup attempts.

Local municipalities cater to yard sale buffs with special dates encouraging residents to do their spring cleaning and make a few extra bucks. Some cities offer special maps and lists of addresses while others merely announce, "Hey, everyone, let's have a yard sale."

Unless otherwise noted, citywide sales come without yard sale permit fees — even in municipalities that usually charge for one.

Some cities host cleanup and drop-off days to help residents to get rid of unwanted items that don't sell. This year's list:

Central Point (May 4)

Always the first sale to spring up each May, the city of Central Point will host its citywide sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4. Many residents start their sales even earlier and hold their sales until almost sundown.

The city's parks and recreation department will publish a list of sales that will be made available at City Hall on the day of the event or on the city website, accessible via smart phones, at www.centralpointoregon.gov. Call 541-664-3321, ext. 263, by April 26 to be included on the list of sales.

Eagle Point Golf Course Community (May 3-5)

The three-day sale for golf course area residents in Eagle Point, will be held Friday through Sunday, with sale times 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday (May 3-4) and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday (May 5).

To get there, take Highway 62 into Eagle Point, turn right onto Shasta Avenue, then take Alta Vista to Eagle Point Drive. Watch for sale signs on Eagle Point Drive, RT Jones Boulevard, Arrowhead Trail, Glenwood Drive and all side streets and cul-de-sacs in between.

Talent (May 11)

The following weekend, the Outdoor Discovery Program in Talent will host the town's big yard sale event.

The school will feature an onsite sale — yard sale and bake sale items — at 309 W. Main.

A map and listing of registered sales will be available beginning May 1 (and on sale day) at the school, City Hall, Ray's Market, the post office and downtown laundromat.

To have a sale included on the list ($5 fee), visit Ray's before April 26 or call 541-535-4262.

Phoenix (May 18)

In Phoenix, the annual sale is held in conjunction with a Friends of the Phoenix Library book sale. Both are set to start at 9 a.m. The yard sale is typically held "sun up" to "sun down." For details on the book sale, call the Phoenix library branch, 541-535-7090.

Shady Cove (May 18-19)

A weekend before a citywide cleanup effort, Shady Cove residents are invited to have an informal one- or two-day sale.

Rogue Valley Manor, Medford (June 14-16)

Residents of the Rogue Valley Manor will hold their three-day event at the Medford Armory in mid-June. The sale includes household goods, electronics, furniture, clothing and jewelry. Sales times are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $2. Children younger than 12 are admitted free.

Jacksonville (Sept. 6-7)

Skipping the heat of July and August, the city of Jacksonville sale will resume the list of sales with its early September event.

One of the valley's most popular sales takes place the second weekend in September each year. The Jacksonville Boosters Club, sponsor of the sale, will host a sale in the Sterling Bank parking lot and residents around town will host their own.

Only Jacksonville residents are permitted to participate in the sale and shoppers are encouraged to car pool because of traffic issues.

Eagle Point Golf Course Community (Sept. 27-29)

In the final citywide sale of the "season," Eagle Point Golf Course Community residents will host their second sale of the year. Hours are the same — 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
