  • Mary Jo Janin, 88, of Trail, Ore., passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013 in Medford, Ore. She was born July 20, 1924 in Anaheim, Calif., to the late Clarence Virgil (Jim) and Elsie Evelyn Ford.
    Mary Jo received a bachelor of arts degree from George Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, with a major in education and a minor in Spanish, and began teaching elementary school in 1945. She taught school for seven years in Southern California and then relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area where she met her future husband, Donald I. Janin. The couple married February 18, 1955, and raised Mary Jo's two nieces as their own daughters. Mary Jo was employed by the South San Francisco School District as an elementary teacher and reading specialist for 31 years.
    Mary Jo was an accomplished musician and was the organist for the First Baptist Church in San Bruno, Calif.. During her husband's employment with United Air Lines, she accompanied the all-male singing group, the "UnitedAires" on piano. She was a member of Galen Marshall's Masterworks Chorale, and toured Europe with the Chorale in 1977. She was active in the California Teacher's Association and the San Bruno Garden Club.
    Mary Jo and her husband retired to Oregon in August of 1983. They joined the Trail Community Church where Mary Jo became the pianist, continuing until shortly before her death. She was a member of the Medford Christian Women's Club, now the Rogue Valley Women's Connection, attending regular luncheons and participating as an avid and competitive bidder at the annual charity auctions.
    Mary Jo was a talented artist and was active in the Rogue Valley artist community. She created and sold many beautiful oil paintings, watercolors, and pastels. Mary Jo also loved to travel and made numerous trips to various European countries, as well as trips to Hawaii, Russia, Israel, and Egypt.
    Mary Jo will be remembered by her loving "daughters," Dee-Marie Broyles (husband Gary) and Lora-Layne Akers. She is also survived by four grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Janin and her siblings, Marcia E. Diltz and James R. Ford.
    Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service for Mary Jo at 12:30 Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Trail Community Church, 399 Old Trail Creek Road, Trail, Ore. Luncheon will be provided after the service.
    In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Trail Community Church.
