EAGLE POINT — Eagle Point's Glen Linder and Ashland's Matt Hedges cracked the top five on the first day of the two-day Class 5A District 1 boys tournament at Eagle Point Golf Club on Thursday.
Linder shot a 4-over-par 76 and is tied for second place. Hedges is one shot back and tied for fourth place.
The top two teams and top five individuals qualify for the state tournament.
Summit's Jack Loberg led the Storm, of Bend, to the first-day lead. His 73 tops the field, as does Summit's 308 team score. Bend is second at 319. Ashland is in fourth place and Eagle Point fifth.
The tournament concludes today.
The state tournament is May 13-14 at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.

5A DISTRICT 1 — At Eagle Point, Lindsay Neussl shot a 92 to help Eagle Point grab third place after Day 1 of the two-day district tournament at Eagle Point Golf Club.
Neussl had a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine, but ran into trouble on the back. She finished with the eighth-lowest round out of 24 competitors. The Eagles shot 459 as a team.
Summit leads with a 343 score and Bend is second at 364.
Ashland is with a 487. Carly Walker's 104 was tops for the Grizzlies.
Play finishes today, with the top two teams and top five advancing to May 13-14 at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks.

ASHLAND 13, EAGLE POINT 2, 5 inn. — At Ashland, Ashland erupted for five runs in the second inning and seven in the third to pick up its sixth win in a row in the final Southern Oregon Hybrid 5A clash at North Mountain Park.
Ashland (14-8) swept the three-game series by a combined score of 37-11 to claim the two-team league title.
Bryce Rogan, Steen Fredrickson and Jack Carroll had two hits apiece for the Grizzlies, and starting pitcher Tommy Hulick held Eagle Point (7-12) to two runs on two hits in four innings to pick up his first win of the year.
Rogan delivered a bases-loaded single through the right side to score two runs and break a 1-1 tie with nobody out in the second inning. Fredrickson added an RBI double and Carroll an RBI single to put Ashland on top 6-1.
The Grizzlies piled on in the third, more than doubling their lead on just two hits thanks mostly to Eagle Point's struggles on the mound: The inning included six walks, two hit batsmen, two wild pitches and a passed ball.

PAPPAS INVITATIONAL — At Glendale, Seth Gretz reeled in a pair of victories for the Rogue River boys.
Rogue River's boys and girls both finished in fifth place in the seven-team meet. The Prospect girls took fourth place while its boys settled for sixth.
Gretz won the 400 meters in 55.22 seconds and cleared 5 feet, 10 inches to take the high jump. He finished second in the long jump (19-2), three inches behind winner Colton Maxwell of Elkton.
Rogue River's Brandon Kynsi won the 800 in 2:23.64.
For Prospect, Kevin Baker captured the discus with a throw of 111-3.
On the girls side, Kaylee Biando carried Prospect with a pair of victories. Her throws of 95-3 in the javelin and 35-4 in the shot put were good for firsts.
Rogue River's Skye Downhill had a throw of 80-4 to win the discus, and she tied for second in the high jump alongside teammate Keelie Worthington. Both had jumps of 4-4.
