Rogues shuffle roster as season nears close

The Medford Rogues baseball team updated its roster Saturday with the loss of four players and the addition of four 10-day contract players and one full-season contract player.

Signing a full-season contract was catcher Nico Pacheco, an incoming freshman to Cal State Fullerton.

Pacheco is a senior at Bullard High School in Fresno, Calif. He was named Fresno metro player of the year in 2012, when he hit .364 with 16 doubles and 37 RBIs. He also caught every inning of Bullard's 33 games.

Committing to 10-day contracts are:

  • Outfielder Ryan Denger, sophomore, Mt. Hood CC. Denger, from Glencoe, is hitting .319 with three home runs, 25 RBIs and eight stolen bases.
  • Outfielder/right-handed pitcher Matt Taylor, sophomore, Lane CC. Taylor, of Visalia, Calif., is hitting .319 with one home run and 14 RBIs. He is also 1-0 with a 2.07 ERA in four pitching appearances.
  • Right-handed pitcher Kenyan Middleton, freshman, Lane CC. Middleton, from Portland, is 1-3, with a 3.60 ERA. He has 40 strikeouts in 35 innings.
  • Left-handed pitcher Jake Lessel, freshman, Lane CC. Lessel, from Eugene, leads the Titans with a 1.28 ERA in nine appearances (four starts) covering 28 innings. He has 30 strikeouts.

"This kind of roster movement is pretty common this time of year," Rogues general manager Chuck Heeman said in a release. "Guys decide to take the summer off, sometimes they have family or personal issues to attend to. Coach (Josh) Hogan has found us some very good replacements. With the addition of Pacheco, we've now established a relationship with Cal State Fullerton, one of the top programs in college baseball. We're in very good shape going into the June 5 opener."

Leaving the Rogues roster are pitcher Bryan Clough (Santa Ana JC), catcher Mason Ankeney (Colorado Baptist) and Lane CC pitchers Corben McGuire and Chris Siefert.
