Cleanup nets 66 tons of debris

The second annual Ashland Firewise Clean-up Day netted about 66 tons of yard debris, with more than 250 vehicles dropping off materials, organizers said.

The drop-off event, held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 5 at Lincoln Elementary, gave Ashland residents a place to dispose of yard debris free of charge. Removing overgrown vegetation from around homes can help protect them from spreading wildfires, officials said.

Recology Ashland Sanitary Service and the Ashland Firefighters Association helped put on the program. Ashland Fire & Rescue officials said the materials filled 21 25-yard bins. All materials will be composted.
