CORVALLIS — South Medford senior Noah Brooks and North Medford senior Joey Walker put themselves in contention among a packed first-round field at the Class 6A boys golf state championships at Trysting Tree Golf Club on Monday.
A total of 24 golfers are within four shots of the lead, shared by a foursome that includes Sheldon's Ben Wanichek at 1-under-par 71, with Brooks not far back in a tie for 37th with a 78. Walker's 79 put him in a tie for 41st but only eight shots off the leaders.
Brooks opened his round on the back nine with three straight bogeys and finished with seven overall against 10 pars and one birdie.
Walker also started on the back nine and carded nine bogeys but birdied two of his final holes to complete his round.

CLASS 5A — At Corvallis, Ashland junior Matt Hedges shot a 3-over-par 75 to finish the first of his two rounds in sixth place in the state championships at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
Hedges stands six shots off the pace set by West Albany's Conner Kumpula, who fired a 3 under 69. Not far off the pace either is Eagle Point senior Glenn Linder, who is tied for 14th after carding a 78.
Hedges began his round on the back nine, opening with a bogey and then a birdie. Bogeys on hole Nos. 13-14 were offset by a birdie on the par-5 15th hole as Hedges made the turn at 1 over. On the front nine, a bogey and double bogey on the third and fourth holes, respectively, were countered by a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole to steady his round.
Linder also started on the back nine and a pair of double bogeys made for a slow start as he made his turn at 5 over, but he regrouped to post six pars and a birdie on the sixth hole to finish 6 over for his first round.

CLASS 4A — At Creswell, Phoenix senior Austin Sawchuk posted an opening-round 88 to land in a tie for 19th place overall and nine shots off the pace of leader Bryce Wortman of Mazama, who shot a 7-over-par 79 in the state championships at Emerald Valley Golf Club.
Hidden Valley is fifth in the team standings entering today's final round with a 365 but is only three shots out of third place. The Mustangs were led by an 89 from Tanner Hanks and 90 from Austin Johnson.
North Valley stands seventh in the team race at 380 after Cody Bearisto scored an 89 to lead the way.

CLASS 6A — At Banks, Crater freshman Daniele Giles moved into a tie for 16th place after first-round play with an 11-over-par 83 in the state championships at Quail Valley Golf Course.
Giles managed five of her eight pars on the front nine, where she also had her only double bogey, and finished with nine bogeys in her round.
Beaverton's Gigi Stoll and Forest Grove's Hannah Swanson set the standard on Day 1 with each shooting 73, while Sheldon took a 14-stroke lead in the team race.

CLASS 5A — At Banks, Summit's Madison Odiorne shared the first-day lead with Crescent Valley's Brenna Murphy at 5-over-par 77 and, along with an 83 from Storm teammate Madi Mansberger, helped her team open an 11-shot advantage in the team race over the Raiders in the state championships.

North Valley posted a 442 to stand 13th in the team race, with St. Mary's in 14th at 458. Tristin Vandehey finished with a first-day 96 to pace the Knights, while Taylor Holton had the Crusaders' top score with a 102.

ST. MARY'S 5, UMPQUA VALLEY CHRISTIAN 4 — St. Mary's managed only one hit but took advantage of four errors by UVC and some other miscues to earn the nonleague victory at St. Mary's High.
The Crusaders (17-8) scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning when Sam Hough walked, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a hard grounder to the shortstop that was misplayed for an error.
Daniel Seus had the lone hit with an RBI single during a three-run fifth inning for St. Mary's that also included a couple runs scoring on wild pitches.
Christian Aviles struck out 10 and walked one to earn the win over UVC (21-5).

CRATER 12, ASHLAND 1, 5 inn. — At Ashland, Katelyn Britton went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs for Crater, which capped its regular season with the nonleague win at North Mountain Park. The game ended in five innings by virtue of the 10-run mercy rule.
The Comets (8-16) will try to keep their season alive today by hosting a Class 6A play-in game against Gresham at 4:30 p.m.
Britton had a two-run double in the second inning and plated two more in the top of the third with a single.
Dana Lowder also helped the Comets in the third inning with a pinch-hit two-run single.
In the last at-bat of her Ashland softball career, senior Kim Corey hit her first career home run over the left field wall. It was one of only three hits the Grizzlies (7-17) were able to muster.
