Strawberries Romanoff

1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup Grand Marnier (or other good-quality orange-flavored liqueur)
1 quart whole fresh strawberries, washed and stemmed
1 cup whipping cream, whipped stiff and sweetened to taste
Vanilla ice cream, to serve

Early in the day, before your dinner, combine sugar and liqueur in a bowl. Reserve 4 berries for garnish; lightly mash remaining berries, then add them to the bowl of sugar and liqueur, tossing to coat.
Marinate in refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours.

When ready to serve, puree enough of the marinated berries to make 1 cup. Fold the pureed berries into the whipped cream. To the bottom of 4 stemmed glasses, add a dollop of the ice cream. Top with one quarter of the remaining berries and the liqueur they're marinating in, then top with a portion of the whipped cream and berry mixture. Garnish with reserved whole fresh berries.
