Spelling contest winners

Southern Oregon University Pre-College Youth Programs coordinates the Regional Spelling Contest each year, which is level two of the State Spelling Contest sponsored by the Oregon Department of Education. Two counties were represented in the 37th annual competition May 11 at SOU.

Following are the names of the winners. First Place winners will participate in the State Spelling Contest Aug. 31 at the Oregon State Fairgrounds, Salem.

Division 1, grades 1-5: First Place, fifth-grader Ben Hart, Highland Elementary School, Grants Pass; Second Place, fourth-grader Porter Tiffee, Mountain View Elementary School, Eagle Point; Third Place, fifth-grader Milo Bertrand, Talent Elementary School, Talent.

Division 2, grades 6-8: First Place, sixth-grader Liam Patton, Lone Pine Elementary School, Medford; Second Place, eighth-grader Chad Countiss, Lincoln Savage Middle School, Grants Pass; Third Place, eighth-grader Sarah Sanchez, North Middle School, Grants Pass.

Division 3, grades 9-12: First Place, 10th-grader Liam Dwyer, Illinois Valley High School, Cave Junction: Second Place, 11th-grader John Cook, Grants Pass High School, Grants Pass; Third Place, 11th-grader Michael Cyr, North Medford High School, Medford.
