I'm guessing here — to fly a plane or drive a train, people have to go through some psychological testing and a complete background check. I suggest anyone applying for a gun or weapon of any type, needs to have a background check and psychological profile testing, plus either fingerprint or blood sample. Those people who already have a gun in their possession would need to go through such parameters or be fined.
As an added tool to quell violence, the media ought not mention violent acts in their newspapers, and weapon-oriented killing videos ought to be outlawed. Aren't our prisons overcrowded? It would appear crime is out of control and getting worse!
Automobiles aren't dangerous either, unless the person behind the wheel has some behavioral driving problems, as when I was traveling 20 mph in downtown Ashland and two vehicles screeched their brakes before almost climbing into my trunk! It's not the miles per hour, or the vehicle — it's the driver's behavior! — Jeff Kassman, Ashland
Oregon cannot reach its employment and income goals unless businesses are confident they can succeed here. We need to look at states like Texas and South Dakota to see how to create a business-friendly, instead of a business-antagonistic, environment.
Maybe, just maybe, Republicans would do a better job of this than Democrats like Alan Bates and Peter Buckley. — Sandra Abercrombie, Medford
